Head Sailing Coach
A lifelong sailor who grew up in New England, Kieran O'Connell was captain of his high school sailing team at St. John’s Prep in Danvers, MA. He went on to attend St. Joseph’s College of Maine, where he captained the swimming and diving teams, and then Boston Architectural College.

Coach O’Connell was the Junior Programs Director of the Annisquam Yacht Club (MA) and Head Varsity Sailing Coach at Manchester Essex High School (MA). Under his direction, Manchester was the only New England public school to qualify for the prestigious Mallory Cup Fleet Racing National Championship. The team went on to be 2015 MA State Champions and 2015 Mass Bay League Regatta Champions. O’Connell was the Mass Bay League Rep to the New England School Sailing Association Executive Committee, and Chair of the NESSA Herreshoff Championship Regatta.

SMALL SCHOOL, BIG SAILING

Sailing has been an important tradition at Christchurch since the school was founded by the Episcopal Church in 1921. For a campus sitting on the banks of the Rappahannock River, sailing is an obvious sport. Christchurch alumnus and Pulitzer Prize-winning author William Styron '42 waxed poetic, “nothing warms my heart more than the recollection of those little sloops we sailed on this matchless river.” Alumnus Roger Moorman '39 designed and built the Mobjack, the first self-bailing, fiberglass-molded, one-design dinghy.

In recent years, the intentionally small school, which enrolls just over 200 students, has become a sailing powerhouse. With its stunning 125 waterfront acres, CCS is one of only two schools in the Virginia Interscholastic Sailing Association (VISA) to have its own fleet and onsite venue. On their way to qualifying for the Chicago regatta, the sailors snapped up local, regional and Mid-Atlantic wins. They are the 2014-15 VISA champions for fleet and team racing as well as the MASSA (MidAtlantic) champions for fleet and team. Last weekend, they sailed in the country’s oldest high school race, the Mallory Doublehanded National Fleet Racing Championship at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD. There, they finished 9th in the country.

The team is coached, and coached well, by Kieran O'Connell, an accomplished sailor who has deep roots in New England sailing. He and the CCS team are reaping great outcomes with emphasis on the fundamentals of excellent boat handling, perfect pass backs and remarkable starts.

In addition to excellence and discipline in sailing basics, the team attributes its breathtaking success to hard work, competitive spirit, great camaraderie and  team chemistry. The great chemistry comes from the top down. Coach O'Connell not only coaches his sailors, but he lives at the school and is a dorm parent. The kids know him well, and he knows them well, both on and off the water.  Whether they’re talking about sailing or about life, he tells them, “Be bold and put yourself out there …” That advice seems to be working.

ON TO THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS!
Congratulations and well wishes to the Christchurch sailors who won BOTH the MASSA Fleet AND Team Racing Championships, and are headed to Charleston, SC on May 13-15 for the Mallory Trophy National Championship and then to Anacortes, Washington for the Baker Trophy National Championship on May 27-29.

Read this great article by our own Boyd Bragg '10 about his transition to 420s, here at CCS! See page 30, Transitioning Out of Optimists.

Congratulations to the Christchurch School sailing team. Our sailors won the MASSA Fall Fleet Racing Championship at Norfolk Yacht and Country Club last weekend. This qualifies them for the Atlantic Coast Championship Regatta. Go Blue!

5/23/2015
The Christchurch School sailing team competed with the best in the country for the Baker Team Racing National Championship at the Chicago Yacht Club in May, 2015. They placed 6th place overall out of 12. Hooray, Seahorses!

4/30/2015
The Christchurch School Varsity Sailing Team sailed in the MASSA Team Race Qualifier this past weekend for the Baker National Team Racing Championship to be held at the Chicago Yacht Club, Belmont Station, Chicago, IL on May 23-24, 2015. The Christchurch School Sailing Team finished the weekend with a 15W/2L record and the team came away with a solid victory! This is another big accomplishment for Christchurch School Sailing Team this season, and this is only the second time in school history that our sailors have qualified for the Baker Trophy. The last time the team sailed in the Baker Team Race Nationals was back in 2009, where the team placed 7th overall. This year, the Christchurch Sailing Team hopes to improve this ranking from Spring 2009 with emphasis on excellent boat handling, perfect pass backs, and remarkable starts.
