Balance, By Design
Our co-curricular activities support and complement the academic program while creating balance, encouraging students to develop interests and skills outside of schoolwork. They are part of how a Christchurch education adds up to more than a transcript.
For more than a decade, two of those programs have drawn students straight to the water, designed for anyone who wants to go deeper into their connection with the Rappahannock River and our place in its watershed.
Two Ways In

Both programs are oriented around enjoyment, conservation, skill-building, and community. Together they turn the river outside our windows into a place to learn, work, and belong.
AquacultureHands-on projects focused on making a positive impact on the local community and the environment. From organic agriculture to innovative oyster aquaculture, Aquaculture constantly seeks out ways to improve our quality of life alongside water quality. |
River & OutdoorAn exploration of the natural wonders of our Tidewater region while building outdoor skills. Students become accomplished canoers, shallow-water anglers, explorers, observers, and conservationists, deepening the school's environmental connection to the river. |

What the Outdoors Teaches
Time spent learning outdoors, especially around conservation and the environment, pays off in ways that reach far beyond any single afternoon. Caring for the river encourages a stewardship ethic and a real desire to make a positive impact on the community and the world. Students in a nature-rich setting build a strong appreciation for the outdoors and a clearer grasp of big-picture issues like water quality and environmental impact.
