Bay Restoration

Christchurch students launched and maintain an ambitious oyster recovery program that is improving the water quality of the Chesapeake Bay. Oysters naturally clean and filter local waters, with one adult oyster filtering as many as 50 gallons of water a day. Using money raised by recycling aluminum cans, students cultivated an oyster reef at the school's waterfront. Christchurch also helped Restore Urbanna Creek, a local conservation organization, secure a $50,000 grant from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation for a joint project to restore oysters to Urbanna Creek. To date, students have recycled more than five million cans and planted more than one million oysters - that translates to 50 million gallons of clean water flowing into the Chesapeake Bay every day.
