THOUGHTS FROM A 3X DAY STUDENT MOM ...
"After our kids started at Christchurch we realized there were several hidden benefits to being a day student at a boarding school. First of all, our kids have access to their teachers, coaches, and fellow students after hours and on the weekends. This is so helpful when they need to do a project or finish a paper in the evenings or on the weekend.
Day students and boarders benefit equally from the guidance and attention at the school. It was becoming a struggle between our son and us to get him to complete his work, but now that his advisor and teachers have assumed that role things are much smoother at home!
There is a real sense of community at the school. It’s like a small college in a way. It’s kind of a big family. I don’t think that the larger community around us realizes that this hugely diverse group is right there. I think we are kind of in a bubble. It’s nice that our kids get to see their teachers after hours and not just in the classroom or on the field. They eat meals sometimes in their homes and really enjoy interacting with their kids. There are a lot of young faculty kids who bring such joy to the campus!
Our kids eat three meals a day at school most days. To be honest, I was a little sad about this at first. I missed our family dinners, but I quickly saw the benefit! It certainly helped our family grocery bill, and our kids could have some social time with friends. When they got home at night they were ready to study.
We really enjoy having boarders stay with us. Several have spent vacations and long weekends with us. We have become very close to them, and we love it when they come back to visit us even after graduation. They have become like family to us.
Our kids would never have had this exposure in a typical day school environment. They also have learned how to be more independent because they see their boarding friends thriving far away from home and managing their own day-to-day life. It’s a day school plus experience not just for our kids, but also for our whole family. We feel so lucky to be part of the Christchurch Family!"
