Associate Head of School for External Affairs

Beginning on or Before July 1, 2018

Christchurch School seeks an experienced and dynamic independent school advancement professional to lead the dozen personnel in its admissions, communications, and development departments as part of a mission driven institution. This professional will oversee all three departments while serving as the school’s chief development officer.

This year-round position reports to the Head of School and is a member of the school’s senior leadership team. By directing unified advancement operations, the Associate Head for External Affairs is responsible for growing $7M in annual operating revenue and planning a capital campaign for the school’s upcoming centennial in 2020/21.

As a small rural coed boarding school with a day component, CCS has felt the pressure of the general decline in boarding enrollment in North America over the last decade. CCS is one of the charter members of the North American Boarding Initiative launched by The Association of Boarding Schools to stimulate interest in these schools. The Admissions Office is ably led by a new director; however, the Associate Head will need to understand the admissions market well so that he or she can direct marketing and admissions efforts that will sustain enrollment. Revamped marketing and admissions efforts over the last 24 months have led to enrollment gains. Sustaining this momentum is important.

CCS Fundraising efforts generally produce about $1.3M per year with about $800K of annual giving and $500K per year in capital gifts. There is potential to significantly grow totals in both areas. Within the last ten years, CCS culminated a successful $8M capital campaign and hopes a centennial campaign will be in the same range. The new Associate Head will be expected to devote most of his or her time to fundraising. He or she will develop campaign strategy in conjunction with the head of school and consultants and engage in the solicitation of major gifts.

The ideal candidate for this position will be a mid-career professional with experience in four areas, but two are a requirement: (1) small boarding school experience, (2) capital fundraising in an independent school, (3) independent school marketing/communications, preferably boarding and (4) independent school admissions, preferably boarding. Candidate should have strong communication skills, demonstrated track record in closing major gifts, and willingness to advocate for the advancement staff.   Candidate should understand his or her work as part of a team devoted to fulfilling the school’s mission:

Christchurch inspires and guides each student’s unique journey to self-confidence, purpose, and identity.  Within a caring, structured community, students discover their infinite value and develop the skills to become compassionate, successful, and engaged global citizens.

Compensation and benefits are consistent with similar VAIS boarding schools.

Interested persons should send letter of interest, resume, and advancement philosophy to Mr. John E. (Jeb) Byers at jbyers@christchurchschool.org no later than 1 March 2018.
