MUSIC & PERFORMING ARTS TEACHER
FULL-TIME
ACADEMIC YEAR 2024-25

Christchurch School is a co-ed Episcopal boarding and day school serving grades 9—12. Founded in 1921, Christchurch is located on a 125-acre waterfront campus on the Rappahannock River in eastern Virginia’s tidewater region. The school’s Mission is to inspire and guide each student's unique journey to self-confidence, purpose, and identity within a caring, structured community, where they discover their infinite value and develop the skills to become compassionate, successful, and engaged global citizens.

Position Overview. Christchurch School seeks a full-time performing arts teacher.  The ideal candidate would have a focus in music as well as experience in multiple areas of the performing arts: theater and acting, music, choir, instrumental.  Our desire is to hire someone who can continue our existing programs in choral and musical production.  We would welcome people with other backgrounds who might also add to our existing programs.

Broadly, Christchurch School fosters a student-centered approach to pedagogical practices, valuing the craft of teaching and embracing the boarding school model for meaningful education of the whole child. Equally, employees at CCS are expected to foster an inclusive workplace and contribute to a community built on equitable policies and procedures.  Teachers at CCS also contribute to the school by leading an advisory of 7-10 students, being a part of a duty team one evening per week and 6-7 weekends per year, and participating in two seasons of co-curriculars (athletics, fitness, visual and performing arts, community service, and/or intramurals).

Qualifications
  • Qualified candidates should hold a bachelor’s degree in a performing arts related field or extensive professional experience in the arts with strong priority for someone with experience in music
  • Passionate about education as a profession and excited to learn or hone the craft of teaching
  • Candidates should be realistic and excited about teaching in a boarding school.

Preferred
  • 1-3 years teaching experience, preferably in a boarding or independent school
  • Experience with helping students with a passion for the performing arts develop a portfolio for post-secondary experience and education
  • This position is also expected to participate in the school’s co-curricular program.  While something in the performing arts would be a natural fit, that is not required if a candidate has experience and passion in other areas of our co-curriculum program

Work environment and physical demands:
  • Ability to be mobile around campus and buildings
  • Ability to work at a desk and computer screen for extended periods
  • Some travel required (mainly for athletic competitions)
