Place-Based at Christchurch
The academic schedule at Christchurch. whether for boarding or day, is similar to a college schedule, with classes beginning at 8:45 a.m. Students take six classes a semester - three classes per day lasting 85 minutes, with classes scheduled on alternating days. The longer class periods create more opportunities for projects and labs that keep students engaged and foster a deeper connection with the material, while alternating class days mean evening homework is focused on fewer subjects. The carefully-designed private school schedule teaches students to manage their time effectively and better prepares them for college life.

IN ADDITION TO rigorous course material, students learn how to collaborate, problem solve, and use evolving technology as a creative tool. Christchurch's innovative curriculum also takes full advantage of the school's waterfront location on the Rappahannock River. The river and historic Tidewater Virginia serve as a living classroom where students participate in hands-on learning that is not duplicated by any other school. Applying the skills they learn to solve problems in the tidewater prepares students to solve problems in the larger world.

TIDEWATER: Our Place, Our Selves, Our Community
To what extent do individual, cultural, and community experiences influence how we interpret the world around us?
The ninth grade examines the concept of place and self through local field experiences and content relevant to either the local area or to themes of place and self.
On their fall Immersion Trip, ninth graders canoe the Dragon Run and Piankatank River. -
10th Grade
RIVER: Many Places, Many Selves, Many Communities
Throughout historical regions, to what extent do one's community's needs and wants impact another's?
Sophomores expand content to places, selves, and communities throughout human history and geography, asking fundamental questions of what it means to be a self in different communities.
On their spring Immersion Trip, sophomores explore the Rappahannock River watershed. -
11th Grade
ESTUARY: Our Selves, Our Nation
To what extent do the desires of individuals and groups conflict with priorities of the nation?
Juniors focus on the national experience and draw on watershed resources of significance to nations.
On their spring Immersion Trip, the eleventh graders investigate Tangier Island and Reedville. -
12th Grade
WORLD: Our Selves, Our World
To what extent can the perspectives and actions of individuals, communities, and nations impact our contemporary world?
The twelfth grade focuses on understanding the self in relation to society globally, and again in relation to one's local place. Field experiences emphasize international connections and the realities of the post-colonial, 21st century world.
On their spring Immersion Trip, seniors explore the Potomac River and Washington, DC with an emphasis on global sustainability issues.
